How left wing progressive ideology is so often self-defeating
It took the UK Supreme Court to spell out to the left-wing progressives what the rest of society already knew. That male human beings who undergo female hormonal treatment or surgery to change their body so that they appear feminine to anyone who cares to look at them, are still male.
The problem that left-wing progressives often have is that they fight for oppressed people or disadvantaged people or minorities, ignoring the reality that those oppressed people, those disadvantaged people, those minorities may not share the same views as themselves. This has happened in America where a liberal left group of local politicians celebrated when a local council became a majority muslim led council, who subsequently banned the flying of the pride flag. This angered the liberals, I don’t know why, because it is common knowledge that Islam is much less tolerant of homosexuality than the secular West.
Now it has happened again. It was the liberal left-wing, the progressives who pushed and pushed the slogan that “Trans Women are real Women”. They have found out now that this isn’t the case. And the people in the UK who challenged this ideology (for that is what it is) were, yes you guessed it, liberal left-wing progressives. Women specifically, a historically oppressed group who fought for generations to be treated equally in society, to have the same rights as men, had to fight again but this time it was against their own political allies. They had to fight to protect the freedoms and rights that the liberal left progressives had helped them achieve. And ironically it was the forces of reaction, of conservatism that assisted and supported these women.
Even now in today’s world, women in some societies are still not granted the same rights as men, and yet it seemed that some women in the UK, such as Nicola Sturgeon were happy to have males masquerading as women take women’s jobs, gain access to vulnerable and traumatized woman’s only spaces, take women’s awards and take women’s sporting records. How this situation ever arose and how the elites of government and of industry ever went along with it, is a worrying thing. But it shows the power of the lobby groups, it shows the power of advertising, and of celebrity endorsement and of repetition of messages. The simple fact of the matter is that the liberal left were brainwashed by ever more extreme factions of their own political wing. And this is always a danger for the left. In the rush to appear the most radical, the most progressive, those who fail to go along with the latest thought are seen as traitors to the cause, enemies of the revolution, trying to halt progress.
Women in the UK were the radicals early in the 20th century, by late 20th century, they were mainstream, by the 21st century they were seen as the reactionary conservatives by the trans-lobby. They were called TERFs Trans-Exluding Radical Feminists ( I think it means) an irony in itself, considering that the trans-activists assertion that simply holding a bit of paper called a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) is all that is needed to turn a man into a woman. That’s pretty radical!
Never mind that the male masquerading as a woman never had to grow up with period pains, experience the stress, trauma and embarrassment of those first periods. Never mind that the male masquerading as a woman never had to cope with the body changes that female puberty brings, or with the female adolescent hormonal changes and the associated emotional changes that brings. Never mind that at a cellular level that male masquerading as a female the body was biologically male in every cell of that body. Never mind that no male would ever get pregnant or give birth, or suffer the irritations, hot sweats, the upsets, the embarrassment even of the female menopause. Never mind that the female brain develops differently to the male brain. None of those things that make women uniquely women mattered to the trans-activist lobby. What mattered was driving their ideology, focussing on their goal, getting men into women’s only spaces, and they could do that by making the claim that trans-women really were women.
Apart from scientific fact that men cannot change their fundamental cellular makeup and become a woman, there is another flaw in the trans-activists ideology. It diminishes the very people they were trying to claim to be. If a woman is only defined by hormones, body shape or even just a piece of paper, then the lived experience surely means nothing. All the challenges that women have had to face meant nothing, because men and women are really the same. It’s just a choice, nothing more. Such an ideology is self-defeating in the end, because aside the facts of physical, developmental and neurological differences between males and females, the reality of the lived experience of males and females is completely different. Just as no female can truly understand what it is to be a male, and no male can truly understand what it is to be female, because the lived experiences are completely different. Ideology can only survive if it can translate into the real world.
I find it utterly abhorrent that an organisation such as Stonewall can be allowed to recommend puberty blockers for children for what is self-evidently a mental issue in young people battling with who they are. Puberty is a natural process, and to interfere with it based on how a person feels, as opposed to some physical development issue that endangers the individual, seems to me to be as radical and dangerous practice as allowing unregulated genetically modified crops into our food chain. At worst the relevant medical practitioners are conducting uncontrolled neurological and physical medical experiments on children, at best they are letting ideology and not medical science guide their hands and are doing a disservice to the very people they are meant to be caring for.
“I was born in the wrong body” is a feeling. A self-belief, either self-generated or suggested by external parties. It is just that. It is a feeling, it is not a scientific fact. It is important to the individual concerned. They may believe it with their heart and soul, but belief in the human condition is just a thought process it is a fleeting ethereal thing, it does not make it a reality or a scientific fact. A devout belief in a god does not make the god real. It only feels real to that person. It is often noted that a person who loses a limb can still feel that limb. Still feeling it and at times believing it is still there does not make it so. At the extreme, someone who is depressed, under mental trauma or stress, to the extent that they believe that they would be better off if dead, is not treated by acquiescing to their wishes and killing them! We as a society would never countenance such a horrific act, and yet some people in the extreme trans-ideology sphere seem to think that because a young person “feels” they are of the opposite sex, that the rest of society should not only concur with their wishes to treat them as such, but that society is then at liberty to take extreme measures to re-enforce those feelings with drugs and surgical procedures, whilst that individual is still vulnerable and confused. Once the person has reached adulthood and is has shaken off the confusion of adolescence and childhood, then if they wish to undergo a hormonal and surgical procedure, then that is the proper time for such interventions, and best wishes to the individuals concerned.
I hope any adult who feels they are in the wrong body finds happiness in by changing their appearance to fit in with the person they feel they are, be it a simple change of clothes, a wig, or hormonal treatment or surgery. And it’s not for any of us to be cruel to such individuals or to deny them the opportunities that the rest of society enjoy. But whilst they feel a thing, it does not make them that thing. And with all decisions there are consequences. Biological males should not compete in women’s only sports or women’s only competitions of any kind. Biological males should not be allowed to fill positions of work or responsibility that are reserved for women. That right to those women only spaces is a right that has been fought for in our society over many generations, with some individuals paying the ultimate sacrifice to ensure it’s legacy. A GRC must not be permitted to be all that is necessary to ride roughshod over those sacrifices.
So the trans-ideology has failed, much as many ideologies of the left have failed. I for one breathe a sigh of relief, but I am left pondering one point. Why have some women gone along with an ideology that dismisses their existence as no more valid than a vial of hormones, artificial breasts, artificial cervix and a piece of paper?
Answers on a postcard.
Cheers
